Why did the CW decide to push back finishing the airings of gossip girl season three?

does anyone know why the CW did that, they decided to take a "break" from gossip girl, and i'm not sure when the season is supposed to return either, but i do know it stopped at episode 12, if anyone can tell me why they did that, and when it is supposed to return would be amazing! thanks! :)
