Why are curse words bad?

People just reach a mutual consensus saying that a certain word is derogatory against a specific individual or ethnic group. Once a word becomes widespread enough, societies say that the word should not be used in public. But, I just feel like it's stupid to give one word so much power. Some would even argue it's dangerous.
